Yesterday’s Results for Chicago Cubs vs Arizona Diamondbacks

Analysis: My selection is on Arizona over Chicago at 10:10 pm ET on Thursday. The Cubs return stateside after an 0-2 start in the Tokyo Series against the Dodgers last week, and while they'll be eager to get into the win column, this is a tough spot for them. Justin Steele gets the Opening Day nod for Chicago, but his 2024 season was derailed almost immediately after allowing five earned runs in his first start before landing on the injured list. Steele hasn't looked sharp this spring, either, struggling to a 9.35 ERA and 1.62 WHIP over three outings. Adding to the concern, Arizona’s lineup has had success against him, hitting .338 with an .858 OPS in previous meetings. The Diamondbacks will counter with Zac Gallen, who dealt with injuries last season but is primed for a bounce-back year. While his 3.38 FIP and 1.26 WHIP in 2024 weren’t quite up to his usual standards, he looked solid in spring training, allowing just one home run in 9 1/3 innings while posting a 2.89 ERA. He also has a strong track record against the Cubs, holding their hitters to a .207 average and .534 OPS. Arizona holds the pitching edge in this matchup, and with Chicago still working its way back into rhythm after the overseas trip, I like the Diamondbacks to take advantage on Opening Day.
