- Rick Pitino has St. John’s up to 9-2 and while four wins qualify as top 100 results, none of those are top 60 wins as it has been a favorable path. St. John’s has good efficiency numbers on both sides of the ball but the Red Storm are 8-0 at home and 1-2 in neutral site games, losing close games to Georgia and Baylor in the Bahamas. This is the team’s first road game of the season and there are concerns for the Red Storm with below average 3-point and free throw shooting results, especially for a team playing at an up-tempo pace. Providence is only 7-5 and the five losses have all come in the past seven games. In that span Providence has two top 100 wins however including a win over BYU that rates above any win St. John’s has produced. Kim English led a 21-win team in his first season with the Friars last year with elite defensive numbers and home court held in the head-to-head games in this series with Providence winning 75-72 at home last February but losing 75-73 on the road at St. John’s last January. In the 2-5 run in the past seven games vs. all top 115 teams, Providence is only -13 in net scoring as the losses have been close games and none of the losses came at home where the Friars are 6-0 S/U this season. Providence plays at a deliberate pace and has a top 20 effective field goal rate nationally while being a stronger outside shooting team than St. John’s. Bryce Hopkins is questionable for Providence, sitting out last Saturday’s game after playing in his first three games of the season there is decent depth and experience on the roster. The past four meetings between these teams have all been decided by five or fewer points and St. John’s at 8-3 ATS is getting priced a bit too high for a team in its first road game of the season.
