I believe that St. John’s is the better overall team in this matchup, and I was hoping to be able to snag them around -1.5 or -2.0 in this game. However, I was off by two
possession in my mind, so it looks like it’s time to buy back on Providence’s defense and it’s a league game. There’s just no chance that I’m laying three plus full possessions on the road in a high-leverage, early-season Big East matchup. These teams met twice last season, and they split the series 1-1. Providence won the home game outright (75-72), and lost the road game by just two points (75-73). Those are really the only meaningful head-to-head matchups, as they’re the only games where it was Rick Pitino vs. Kim English. On the offensive side, these two schools each rank lower than 190th in both three-point shooting and free-throw percentage. Furthermore, St. John’s has yet to play a true road game, so look for their explosive offense to potentially struggle in this one. Ultimately, I believe that the Friars will be able to lean on their tough defense and extremely slow pace to keep this game within striking distance. I’ll take the points with Providence at home.
