Season Record

Wizards: 14-9, 4th place Eastern Conference
Pacers: 9-16, 13th place Eastern Conference

The Washington Wizards have been one of the three very pleasant surprises in the NBA’s Eastern Conference this season. (The other two are the Chicago Bulls and the Charlotte Hornets… we have to hold off judgement before adding the Cleveland Cavaliers).  Last season the Wizards finished below .500 on the season and in eighth place.  Last season the lineup included Russell Westbrook playing alongside Bradley Beal (when they were both healthy) and it lead to a choppy offensive pace with almost no defense played.  This last offseason the Wizards traded Russell Westbrook and two future 2nd round picks to the Los Angeles Lakers for Kyle Kuzma, Motrezl Harrell, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, and the #22 pick in the draft.  The Wizards won the trade by a mile.  It was a master stroke of genius when you consider that they only recently got Russell Westbrook in a move that dumped the expired milk that is John Wall.

The Indiana Pacers are not a winning team right now, but they are a tough matchup for anybody in the league. The Pacers star Domantas Sabonis the type of gifted that can fill the boxscore in multiple categories, but alas it is just for entertainment purposes since they simply aren’t winning many regular season games.  In fact they are currently on a four-game losing streak.  The handicapping professionals will be listing the Pacers as Underdogs against most opponents until they start winning some contests.

Washington Wizards vs Indiana Pacers Preview and Analysis

Recent Form

The Wizards are 14-9 on the season, but 12-11 ATS.  They have logged 10 Overs and 13 Unders.  They are 6-6 on the road.  The Wiz lost their last game to the Cleveland Cavaliers 116- 101, and are only 4-6 over their last ten games…. So, to still be in 4th place should demonstrate how much they have improved over recent years.

The Pacers are 9-16 on the season, but 12-13 ATS.  They have notched 11 Overs and 14 Unders.  They are 6-6 in home games.

Offensive Analysis

Washington is 20th in points per game with 106.0, 9th in rebounds per game with 46, 14th in AST/TO ratio with 1.7.  The wins for the Wizards are being produced through being 10th in FG% 46.1 and 8th in defending FG% 44%... it also helps that they are 9th in defending 3-pointers.

Indiana is 17th in points per game with 107.3, 10th in rebounds with 45.9, 16th in AST/TO ratio 1.6, 3rd in blocks with 6.0. The losses for the Pacers keep piling up because they are just too average in every category.  Outside of blocks they excel at nothing: 14th FG%, 26th in 3PT%... on defense they are 17th in defending FG% and 23rd in defending 3PT%.  This is a formula to be beaten by anyone in any arena.

Washington Wizards vs Indiana Pacers Prediction

Our prediction for Monday, December 6th is….  Wizards 118 - Pacers 100

The injury bug us back in the Pacers locker room.  It seems they can’t get healthy or stay healthy for any decent amount of time.  The Wizards will take this one easily.

Coach

Wizards: Wes Unseld Jr.  Coach Unseld is the son of the franchise’s most legendary figure Hall of Famer Wes Unseld.  Coach Unseld is not some legacy hire though… He has put in 15 years of assistant coaching in the NBA over 4 teams… he also worked as a scout and player development guy before that.

Pacers:  Rick Carlisle.  Coach Carlisle was the Pacers coach in the early 2000’s… the Pacers had a quality team that contended.  He was hired away by GM Donnie Nelson and owner Mark Cuban to coach the Mavericks which he did for 13 seasons and he won an NBA title.  This offseason when Mark Cuban pushed Coach Carlisle out, he simply went back to the Pacers and will most likely build a contender out of this team again.
