Rays vs Blue Jays Prediction

The Tampa Bay Rays will be taking on the Toronto Blue Jays on Tuesday in the 2nd game of a three-game series that begins Monday with that result still pending. Wednesday’s finale will be a very exciting one as this series has some playoff implications for the Jays, then they take on the Twins on Thursday as they will not be able to catch the White Sox. The Rays lost their series finale on Sunday against the Detroit Tigers 8-7 as they went on to lose that series that started on Friday. The Blue jays have won 3 straight games as they look to hold down their 1st wildcard spot that they are in. They swept the Yankees at Yankee Stadium, a very expensive baseball stadium, prior to their series with the Orioles.

The Rays are coming into this game after losing 3 of their last 4 games with their Monday game's result still pending. They will not be at Tropicana Field for this one. Collin McHugh is getting the nod on Monday while Drew Rasmussen will be the starting pitcher on the mound for this game on Tuesday. Rasmussen is 2-1 with a 3.25 ERA this season. Ryan Yarbrough was supposed to start but has been scratched. The Rays have had a lot of success with him since he came over from the Milwaukee Brewers, winning 6 of their last 7 games when he has made an appearance. In his last start, he allowed 1 ER and 0 BB with 2 Ks on 6 hits through 5 IP. He has faced this Blue Jays lineup once this season back in Jul but he came into the game in the 8th inning as a reliever and did not allow any runs but his team still went on to lose that game. The Rays have still been crushing the ball despite their tiny slump as they have scored 7 runs in each of their last 2 games. They always seem to play the Jays hard in these series' so expect them to continue to hit well as they keep pulling away in that 1st place spot of the American League East.

The Blue Jays are coming into this game on a 3 game winning streak but have actually won 11 of their last 12 and 14 of their last 16 games. They won their game on Sunday night against the Baltimore Orioles 22-7 in Oriole Park at Camden Yards in MD, which was the series finale of a four-game series that they won, including a double-header on Saturday. Alek Manoah will be the starter for the series opener on Monday while Jose Berrios will be throwing the first pitch for the Jays in this night game on Tuesday. Berrios is 11-7 with a 3.52 ERA this season. He won his debut for the Jays after coming over from the Minnesota Twins, but then his team lost 4 straight with him on the bump. Since then, his team has won his last 3 starts, Berrios getting credited with the win in all of those games. In his last start, he allowed 2 ER, 1 of those being a HR, and 2 BB with 8 Ks on 5 hits through 6.2 innings of work. He also hit a batter with a pitch in that game. He has not seen this Rays lineup all season. The Blue Jays' offense has easily been the hottest in the league recently. They have put up 44 runs in their last 3 games alone averaging basically 15 runs scored per game in that span. They actually put up 11 in each on Saturday and then another 22 on Sunday, so they scored 44 runs in a matter of 2 days. No one wants to step in front of this offense right now.

The Rays have been really good all season as they stormed up the standings and have secured 1st place and the division lead growing. The Jays have been even better in their recent games though, possibly the best team in major league baseball right now except for maybe the Giants. Even in a game where the Jays were trailing the entire time until the final inning, a game where they allowed 10 runs scored against them, they still came out as the winners. They have a full list of hitters that are ready to go and assault these pitches they are getting and hit the deck all day. The Rays do not really need to win this game while the Jays have to fight it out in the wildcard race currently holding down the 1st wildcard spot by 1 game after passing the Boston Red Sox in the standings and have the Mariners coming up right behind. They are playing like a team that wants to be in the postseason so the value is to bet on them to keep on rolling and win this game. Vegas has this game going either way but the Jays are clearly the better team right now living rent free in all of their opponents heads with the way they are playing.

Players to Watch

Tampa Bay Rays: Randy Arozarena is one player to watch in this game. He leads his team in hits and he will have to produce some here if his team is to beat these red hot Jays. Watch for him to get some big hits to give his team a chance in this one.

Toronto Blue Jays: Teoscar Hernandez is one player to watch in this game. He can be an electric player when he is hot and this whole team has been hot recently. He can be a big home run hitter so watch for him to have a big game and a big series as every win is a must for these jays right now.

Notable Quotes

"They did a heck of a job fighting back each inning. It's something we're very familiar with ourselves. It's a tough one to lose but that's how it's going to be when we face teams down the stretch." - Brett Philips after his team blew a lead and lost to the Tigers Sunday.

"The last three days, I've been in the game for 35 years, and I've never seen anything like that. I didn't know we were going to score this many runs, but at the end of August, I said we were going to get hot because we have way too many hitters. Now, we're swinging the bats great. It's contagious." - Charlie Montoyo on his team scoring 44 runs in 3 games across 2 days.
