Spurs: 20-35, 13th place Western Conference
Hawks: 26-28, 10th place Eastern Conference

A non-conference battle of teams on the outside looking in.  The NBA trade deadline has come and gone with only one of these teams making minor moves while looking toward the future.  The San Antonio Spurs picked up PG Goran Dragic and a protected first round pick from the Toronto Raptors for Thaddeus Young and Drew Eubanks.  The Spurs may never actually use Dragic at all.  The deal was really just about picking up a pick.  The Spurs will waive Dragic more than likely.  The Spurs also sent SG Derrick White to the Boston Celtics for SG Romeo Langford, SG  Josh Richardson and yet another protected first round pick.  SG Derrick White is an upgrade over both Langford and Richardson, but the new Spurs do have a chance at playing… especially Langford who has an up and down 2 ½ NBA seasons because of injury.  So, the Spurs have picked up 2 additional first round picks and really only gave up Derrick White who wasn’t helping them win many games anyway.  The Hawks ended up making no moves at all… that is no move at the deadline.  They did trade Cam Reddish to the Knicks for Kavin Knox… but that was 2 weeks ago and hasn’t made an impact for either squad yet.  Standing pat at the trade deadline keeps PF John Collins in the Atlanta fold… but it does nothing to address the fact that the Hawks are perilously close to missing the playoffs after last season’s surprise run.

The San Antonio Spurs have only won 3 of their last 10 games.  They are firmly in the bottom few of the Western Conference and the league.  They will not make the playoffs this season and are looking forward to just developing the players they do have.  Everyone close to the team is not surprised that the team didn’t trade Dejounte Murray.  Dejounte leads the club in points, assists, and steals... and is a first time all star.  The team intends to continue building around the sixth year guard.  The opening in the starting lineup where Derrick White used to play leaves minutes available for Lonnie Walker IV and Devin Vassell.  The new Spurs' Langford and Richardson will have a long uphill battle to earn Popovich’s trust in practice before moving up the depth chart to someone who actually plays.

The Atlanta Hawks have won 7 of their last 10 games.  If they keep having stretches like this they will move up in the standings, but probably don’t have enough games left to make it above the play-in tournament.  The three losses were to the Dallas Mavericks and the Toronto Raptors (twice).  Atlanta has had trouble all season long with the injury list.  Everyone missed stretches of time.  Now they have resumed winning just as the injury list has shrunk.  Funny how it works like that.  SF De’Andre Hunter has resumed his solid two-way play… which has taken some weight off of star PG Trae Young who leads the team in points and assists.  C Clint Capela has been solid all year at 10.9 ppg and 12.2 rpg.  PF John Collins survived the rumor mill and will finish the year with the team.  He is a fantastic player at 17 ppg and 8 rpg, but is 6.5 ppg off his career high mark from two seasons ago.  The Hawks may never let on about the kind of deals that were on the table for John Collins but insiders say it was significant and involved multiple shooters going with him.  That deal was never made… If the Hawks don’t become a winner this year or the next the front office will kick themselves forever for not pulling the trigger… especially if John Collins has yet another dip in scoring.
