Magic - Jazz preview, analysis and prediction

The Utah Jazz have bounced back nicely after going through that five-game losing streak, winning four in a row with some reinforcements on the way.

Utah made its big splash of the trade deadline by acquiring Nickeil Alexander-Walker from the New Orleans Pelicans (via the Portland Trail Blazers) to bolster its backcourt off the bench with Jordan Clarkson and replacing the shipped-off Joe Ingles.

Alexander-Walker will make his Utah debut on Friday when the Jazz host the Orlando Magic in what should be a run-away win for the finally-healthy Jazz with the exception of Rudy Gobert.

On a depleted New Orleans team, Alexander-Walker was having one of the best seasons of his young career, averaging 12.8 points in 26 minutes a night. The shooting numbers are down, but you have to expect things will open up in Utah with more perimeter shooting around him.

That’s a big boost to add on with Donovan Mitchell playing as well as he has since returning from concussion protocol. He was two assists shy from his first triple-double during Utah’s 111-85 win over the Golden State Warriors on Wednesday. That’s just another feather in the cap of what’s been a stellar run so far; he had 32 points against the Knicks on Monday after going for 27 on 80 percent shooting against the Nets last Friday.

That game might have put Mitchell well below his season average in scoring, but that was a full team effort against Golden State and another display of how good Utah can be when all are healthy. Getting Gobert back, presumably before the All-Star Game, is going to be a big moment for this Utah team.

But it’s all about easing Alexander-Walker into the fold, and this is a perfect way to do it, against a struggling Orlando team that will likely feel overwhelmed once tip off happens. Orlando is coming off a 113-95 win against the shorthanded Blazers following consecutive double-digit losses to the Grizzlies and Celtics.

It took a Portland team with no Damian Lillard, CJ McCollum and only Justise Winslow for Orlando to actually get a victory. Color me unimpressed. Give me the Jazz in a rout and thank the Magic for a contentious effort. Jazz by 20
