Utah Vs BYU Preview and Analysis

Recent Form
Utah went 3-2 in 2020.  Covid shortened their season and a couple games on the shortened season got cancelled.  They beat Oregon State, Washington State, and Colorado.  They lost to Washington and USC.  It’s all over now…. 2020 was just a dream.  Get vaccinated and play on.

BYU needed the money in 2020 and played as much as they could. They finished 10-1 with 1 game cancelled and then won a bowl game, the RoofClaim.com Boca Raton Bowl.  There they beat the UCF Knights 49-23.

Offensive Analysis

Utah opened the season with a fireworks display on offense.  They beat poor Weber State 40-17.  Baylor transfer quarterback Charlie Brewer completed 19 of 27 passes for 233 yards, 2 TD’s, and an interception.  RB Tavion Thomas had 12 rushes for 102 yards and 2 TD’s.  Tight End Dalton Kincaid caught two touchdowns and finished the day with 75 yards.  Nice, solid, work.  An easy win and on to the next.

BYU opened the season with a win over Arizona 24-16.  BYU’s QB Jaren Hall, has to take over for Zach Wilson, the finest recent product BYU has put out. Jaren got the job done. You would hardly notice that these players have their personal lives governed by a Draconian personal conduct policy that forbids all regular (like dating, partying, and regular experimentation that creates healthy adults) aspects of college life for free Americans… They were so happy with the win. Jaren hall threw for 198 yards and 2 TD’s, he scampered for 36 yards.

Defensive Analysis

BYU’s defense gave up 345 yards passing to the Arizona Wildcats, but only 1 passing TD came of it.  Tack on a few yards rushing and they only gave up 426 yards. BYU didn’t look as solid on defense as the result in the score and the win… but they held against the pac-12’s worst team possibly.  Utah will eat them up if they don’t give better effort from the total defense.  No more arm tackles that lead to two extra yards per rush.

Utes vs Cougars Prediction

Utah will roll-over BYU.  It’s not a foregone conclusion but it is what the recent year’s stats and week 1 results say.
Our prediction for Saturday, September 11th, 2021 is Utah 30 - BYU 13

Key Injuries

Utah: Jaren Kump, Day to Day.
BYU:  WR Gunner Romney (knee) questionable,  WR Kody Epps (foot) questionable, WR Keenan Ellis Out

Players to Watch

Utah:  Charlie Brewer.  This Austin Texas kid is filling up the stat sheet and all the pressure should be on him.  If he can keep it going through the air Utah will win a lot of games.

BYU: Jaren Hall.  He went to a high school called Maple Mountain.  If that is not a quaint small town then nothing is.  Will his small town eyes adjust to the bright lights against bigtime competition? Is he ready for Zach Wilson’s sloppy seconds?... Let’s watch.
