Brewers - Nationals preview and analysis
The Milwaukee Brewers have no lost six in a row, and quite frankly that seems apropos. There was a moment where they were, once upon a time, a great team. But this team isn't that good right now after losing their sixth straight 8-3 against the Philadelphia Phillies.
Now they hit the road to hopefully get back on track when they face the Washington Nationals, and if the Brewers are getting cracked on both ends of the plate, things are spiraling out of control with no sense of relief on the way.
Corbin Burnes threw 113 pitches in 4.1 innings while somehow only being tagged for just one earned run, because that makes sense. Christian Yelich went 2 for 4, and Victor Caratini had three hits and a double against the Phillies. Other than that, that's all that happened.
"I think both starting pitchers had the same same day, really," Brewers manager Craig Counsell said. "I think the hitters did a pretty good job on both sides. I think there was a ton of close pitches that didn't get called strikes and extended innings."
The Brewers should be much better than this, but I think we've seen it coming. This is a group that's been inconsistent this season and is far from the team that won the NL Central and made the playoffs a year ago.
The good news for them is at least they're not as bad as the Nationals are, and that says a lot, if you think about it. But at least the Nationals did get some good news their way, getting Stephen Strasburg back after missing last season with surgery to correct thoracic outlet syndrome. The former World Series MVP is back, and if he returns to full form, it'll do wonders for Washington's future.
"It felt good, and I'm excited to learn from it and get back out there for the next one," Strasburg said. "Fastball command could have been better in certain spots there. I felt the changeup was working pretty well. All in all, it's a place to start and try to build off of it."
The Nationals were coming off a three-game sweep at the hands of the Miami Marlins in Miami, losing 7-4 in the finale. Juan Soto had two RBI, but that was pretty much the only thing that group could muster.
Prediction
I don't anticipate the Nats winning this series, but at least to come back home and win a game or two against what is a rough Milwaukee team says a lot about where both teams are at. Nationals win 6-3
