Season Record

Padres: 2-1, 1st place, NL West
Giants: 1-1, 3rd place NL West

A National League West matchup between the other two California cities. The race in the National League West last season was brutal… Both the San Francisco Giants and the Los Angeles Dodgers won over 100 games.  Their dominance over MLB was also met by a dangerously tight head to head matchup.  The Giants won the regular season series by a single game… by a single run.  Then in a tight playoff series the Dodgers knocked off the Giants and moved on to the World Series.  The Giants have regrouped, dusted themselves off and are hoping to pounce on the league again.  Last season if you had bet the Giants on the moneyline all season long you would have come out way up.  The Padres are a different story.  The Padres started 2021 by showing off the couple of stars they have in the line-up.  Fernando Tatis Jr, and Manny Machado.  Both were effective at the plate and the Padres were a very tough out early in the season.  However in the tough NL West which is also home to the Dodgers and Giants the Padres receded by mid-year.  They didn’t have enough pitching and after Manny and Fernando weren’t as good as advertised at the plate.  They finished the season deeply in 3rd place in the NL West… and the numbers were 14th in ERA and 14th in BA.  Good enough to be slightly above average… but average enough to not be able to beat better teams.  The Padres ended last season with only 2 wins of their last ten games. They start this season with Fernando Tatis Jr nursing an injury.  The Padres, like everyone else, are hoping their handful of minor league call-ups and patchwork free agent moves will become something special enough to improve either the offensive or defensive numbers.

The San Diego Padres opened their season with a four game series against the Arizona Diamondbacks.  A nice easy warm up.  The Padres went 2-1 and will play game 4 today.  Tomorrow the real season starts… Monday April 11th is game 1 of a three game series against San Francisco.  The Giants don’t have much of a record to show yet since their season is only 2 games old… but the absolute guarantee is that they are a better team than the Diamondbacks.

The Giants opened the season with a three game series against the Miami Marlins… They are 1-1 after the first two.  Game three is today.  The first of a 3 game series versus the Padres is Monday April 11th.  The Padres are TBD on the mound.  It will of course depend on which guys get to rest in the final game of the Marlins series.

Key Injuries

Padres: Fernando Tatis Jr Out
Giants: No injuries to report

Players to Watch

Padres: Right-handed pitcher Nick Martinez is scheduled to start.  His Padres record is 3-8 with a 5.66 ERA and 67 strikeouts.  The Padres are hoping Martinez can handle the #5 starter spot this season.  The hope is coupled with them giving Nick a four year $25.5 million deal during the offseason.  Nick bombed out of the majors back in 2017, then spent four season in Japan.  The Padres have convinced themselves that Nick improved quite a bit… and now at 31 years old will be good for the next four seasons.  It is a mistake… the Padres are good at making mistakes.

Giants: 1B Brandon Belt.  Belt was a key component to all of the Giants winning last season.  After two games he is back to his old tricks… leading the team in Home Runs (1), RBI’s (1), and Hits (2).  Two games leaves behind a very small sample size, but last season’s 29 homers with 59 RBI’s gave the 12 year veteran the team lead in both categories.  He will do more of the same this season.

Starting Lineups

Padres: 1) T Grisham CF, 2) M Beaty LF, 3) M Machado 3B, 4) J Cronenworth 2B, 5) L Voit DH, 6) E Hosmer 1B, 7) A Nola C, 8) W Meyers RF, 9) C Abrams SS

Giants: 1) M Yastrzemski RF, 2) B Belt 1B, 3) D Ruf, 4) J Pederson LF, 5) B Crawford SS, 6) W Flores 3B, 7) T Estrada 2B, 8) S Duggar CF, 9) J Bart C

Managers

Padres: Bob Melvin, Former Athletics manager now in year one with the San Diego Padres… he’s hoping one day to manage in the Bigs.

Giants: Gabe Kapler.  He won the NL manager of the year last season… but didn’t make the World Series.

Weather Forecast

Rainy… with a chance of even more rain.  55* High winds possibly reaching 28 mph… Proving that every sporting event not in a dome is really in the dark ages.  You can’t enjoy hot dogs and a frothy beer in 28 mph winds… and you can’t get your kids cotton candy for sure.
