Suns - Warriors preview and analysis

Recent form
Suns: won 18 straight; won 114-103 vs. Pistons on Thursday
Warriors: won 14 of 16; lost 104-96 at Suns on Tuesday

So we're under the presumption the Phoenix Suns are never losing again, right? Congratulations to the Phoenix basketball team for finishing 79-3.

But in all seriousness, if we're looking for a time for the Suns' 18-game winning streak to come to an end, it might be Friday against the Golden State Warriors at Chase Center in a rematch from earlier in the week of the two top teams in the Western Conference. Phoenix won 104-96 at home on Tuesday in what might have been its signature defensive performance of this streak.

Playing in the first game of a back-to-back, the Suns had seven players score in double figures -- highlighted by Cam Payne and Cam Johnson scoring 19 apiece off the bench -- to hold off a valiant rally from the Detroit Pistons at Footprint Center.

"I haven't talked about streaks of any kind just because we have been so focused on improving," Suns coach Monty Williams said. "But it is really cool to be a part of something like that."

And yet the Suns were able to win that game despite the absence of Devin Booker. The All-Star sustained a hamstring injury Tuesday against Golden State and will not play Friday.

The Suns have not been reliable on the books despite this streak. Phoenix has gone 3-1 against the spread despite going 1-5 in the previous six; the Suns were 11.5-point favorites against the Pistons and failed to cover by that dreaded half-point.

"It is hard to win in this league and we are not satisfied but it is special," Williams said. "To do it in front of our fan base, in a special city like this with the history of this franchise is pretty cool and I want our guys to enjoy it."

The Warriors will have had two days off since their loss to Phoenix, which has revenge game all over it. Golden State enters Friday as high as 7-point favorites in some books but is mostly laying 6.5.

Steph Curry was held to just 12 points on 4 of 21 shooting, and things may have gotten out of hand Tuesday had Jordan Poole not kept the Warriors in that game with a team-high 28 points.

"With all of the mistakes we did have and how terrible I shot the ball, it was a close game down the stretch," Curry said Tuesday. "I know Booker got hurt, but yes, it was a good learning lesson for us. Understanding the intensity and the focus we need to beat a team like that."

The Warriors were a dominant 8-1 against the spread before Tuesday's dud. They were even 3.5-point dogs, the second time in eight games they weren't favored (3-point dogs on Nov. 16 in an 18-point victory at the Brooklyn Nets).

Prediction

All good things must come to an end, and the situation isn't favorable for Phoenix. No Booker, road game, SEGABABA, all the ingredients for the streak to come to a thud of an ending. Golden State gets revenge, Curry goes off, and balance is restored. Warriors by 10
