Knicks-Hawks preview and analysis

Recent form
Knicks: lost 118-97 vs. Suns on Friday
Hawks: won seven straight; won 132-100 at Grizzlies on Friday

The Atlanta Hawks will put their seven-game winning streak on the line Saturday when they host the New York Knicks at State Farm Arena.

Both teams are playing the second games of back-to-backs, but the Hawks had the better night Friday with a 32-point win over the Memphis Grizzlies after they lost Ja Morant due to a knee sprain.

Morant played just under nine minutes, and the full-running Hawks dominated without the star point guard opposite them. Trae Young had 31 points on 12 of 16 shooting to go with 10 assists, while Clint Capela dominated inside with 23 points and 17 rebounds.

This Hawks team moved to 6-1 ATS during the winning streak. They were 13-point favorites Monday against the Oklahoma City Thunder but only won by 12.

"We did a good job of moving the ball and getting the ball to the open guys," Hawks coach Nate McMillan said. "And our guys were knocking down shots."

The Knicks, meanwhile, have taken a step back since their 5-1 start, losing eight of 13 and have alternated wins and losses over their past seven games. New York is coming off a 118-97 loss to the Phoenix Suns at Madison Square Garden on Friday night for Phoenix's 15th straight win.

Kemba Walker led the Knicks with 17 points, while Immanuel Quickley had 16 off the bench with going 3 of 6 from 3-point range. Evan Fournier and RJ Barrett had 11 and 10 respectively. Julius Randle was held to just eight shot attempts in 32 minutes, finishing with 9 points and six rebounds.

"If you give them the shots that we gave them, they got a lot of confidence early," Knicks coach Tom Thibodeau said. "Once they get confidence early, they're going to be tough to stop."

The Knicks have gone 2-6 ATS since Nov. 10 while being favored in six of those matchups; New York has gone 2-4 when favored, twice by double digits.

Prediction

The Knicks have to travel over for this matchup, and they likely have nightmares over how the playoffs ended last season. Despite how the Hawks are 1-6 ATS in their last seven against teams with a winning record, the fact that they're on a back-to-back but at home helps a lot in this matchup that is a first round rematch from the NBA Playoffs last season.
