Marlins - Phillies preview and analysis

Alright, so the Philadelphia Phillies are finally over .500. The Twilight Zone is in full effect and we may all just agree that things don't make sense anymore. And they even found a way to defeat Sandy Alcantara, which didn't seem like a possible chance at all.

But the Phillies found a way to rally from down 2-1 in the seventh, capped by a walk-off RBI double from Rhys Hoskins to give the Phillies a 3-2 win over the Miami Marlins in the first game of this series. It will continue Tuesday and the Phillies are partying very heavy on this night.

The world was treated to a wonderful pitcher's duel between the Miami ace Alcantara and a surprising performance from Aaron Nola that cracked 100 pitches, going 7 innings and striking out six. Alcantara went all the way to the eighth -- pitching 7.2 innings -- and might have needed a little more in order to actually get the win.

But it was Hoskins, who went 2-for-4 with that game-winning RBI. Didi Gregorius tied the game in the bottom of the eighth with an RBI single that scored Hoskins.

"I found myself in those situations in the past and come up short," Hoskins said. "Either try and do too much or maybe be a little bit too passive. I was just trying to get a pitch to hit."

The Phillies have now won 10 of 11 since firing Joe Girardi and, again, reaching over .500 is an incredible goal given how this team has underperformed a great deal for the better part of this season. But even with the Phillies being as bad as they were, it has to be a breath of fresh air for them to be this well.

"It's big to come back and win right away and maybe we'll get on a little bit of a roll here," interim manager Rob Thomson said. "I talked to the guys before the game that we need to start winning games in our division."

Ultimately, wasting a gem from Alcantara is a missed opportunity for the Marlins. They're still playing well above anyone's expectations and are playing close to .500 ball. But this is one of those learning moments that they'll need to figure out.

"He got us to a good spot in the game. A great spot in the game," Marlins manager Don Mattingly said. "Just couldn't finish it. Never really want to take Sandy out. At that point, we felt it was the best thing. He walked two guys in the inning. It looked like he was kind of out of gas the way he was forcing some stuff."

Prediction

If the Marlins had any chance at getting a game in this series, this was it. But I don't see that happening with the Phillies on fire. Phillies win 7-5
